The whole Palm Springs valley has really surprised us positively in more than one way.
Apart from its incredible dry heat, its history and the natural attractions (be it man-made or by nature itself), there is also quite a bit of culture to discover, too. And we probably just skimmed the surface...
We visited the very impressive Palm Springs Art Museum, which wouldn't look out of place on the Upper East Side in New York either. Many of Palm Springs' rich inhabitants have either sponsored parts of the museum, or donated some of the artwork (after death), or - rather intriguingly - give their artwork to the museum during the Summer months for safekeeping (while still alive). The museum therefore boasts numerous exhibits from the likes of Warhol, Lichtenstein etc.
For a different kind of culture there is every Thursday evening the "Villagefest", where the main road (Palm Canyon Drive) gets locked off for traffic and instead hundreds of street vendors take over. The already hot temperature is further increased by numerous BBQ stalls... No surprise, this gets Palm Springs' inhabitants out if force - whether it's those on 2 or 4 legs.
Finally, we finished the first third of our round-the-world trip (i.e. the US part) with a very nice evening at the Azul Lounge.
Lori Donato, a singer who our good friend Tom from Zurich put us in touch with, sang some wonderful songs in this cocktail bar tonight. Lucy and Fiona somehow managed to skip the ID-check and so we were able to sample the cool Palm Springs nightlife.
Now it's time to pack our bags again. Tomorrow evening we are leaving Los Angeles for Sydney, Australia.Last thing we heard Sydney had its coldest June in over 30 years...
Well, more from Australia when we get there...
