A step back in time

Washington also does have its green and quiet corners, and here is one of my favourites - the historic Great Falls Tavern on the C&O Canal. As the Potomac River has some serious rapids (especially in the aptly called Great Falls area), they built the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal about 200 years ago. This canal, which is about 185 miles long, connects through a series of locks, tunnels and even bridges the Chesapeake Bay with, ...you guessed it..., the Ohio River.

These days they have boat tours on the canal going through the locks using the original boats, managed by people in old costumes and with horses pulling the boats along the towpath.

A perfect spot for a picnic, even though the beauty of this place is also well-known amongst all the flies and other insects on the East Coast. Hence this spot unfortunately didn't get a resounding "thumbs up" from the three ladies on our tour...
